It's been a while since i actually wrote something. The last few weeks flew by. Progressions at work, at home, in church, in ex-school, etc. Things are looking up and up and up. And the only way things can go from here, is up. Thank You.
The latest things:
1) i'm a Corrinne May fan. I know it's kinda late. Cos everyone's like, been there, done that, kinda thing. But it's me. I'm always one of the last few to catch on to something one. heh. So all of u who have been there and own her songs, send to cherylsia@gmail.com many muacks.
2) I shop every week now. I have new clothes/shoes every week now. But by Thursday, I'l be bored and out of fear from repeating too often, i spend the weekend looking again. It feels really good.
3) i'm starting to really enjoy slow dinners. Dinners where the focus is not food. But people keep talking and talking, they forget about the food. Or better still, order some more so that we can legitimately sit there and talk some more. And ask for water. =)
4) Starting work doesn't make me miss school, contrary to what so many tell me. But it makes me miss my school friends. It's just very different and very much a privilege to hang out with people who have been thru shit with u. People who have seen you grow and love u no matter how much u earn or where u work. That's bliss.
5) Every time i reminise the past, i feel sad. But that sadness propels me to feel very very blessed now. And i always feel so appreciative when i think about now.
6) i recently cut my fringe too short. But it's no big deal really. I haven't lost any friends and hair grows back.
That's about all for now. I'm very very sleepy. I rushed home today hungry and sleepy. It was tough man. But i made it home for home-cooked dinner. And here i am, lost in other pple's blogs and Corrinne May singing. Was supposed to meet SofsDofs. But due to my sleepiness, it had to be pushed back. The meeting is long overdue.
Charles: when u have the time to actually check out my blog, know that u r missed. Keep warm (tho i know it's very hot there) And don't work too hard. Take a lot of photos and start a blog!!!
Clever T: i found ur blog. But i can't remember which are the search terms. Cos i cheated and asked JX. I really really couldn't find it. Mayb u're just not as famous as me. But u r cleverer. heh.
You know, when i started typing this entry, i had ZERO Corrinne May songs. Now, i am a proud owner of ALL her songs. Thank God for u all.

A calamity!
The most exciting thing this week happened last nite. I came home as usual to a hyper-active black furry ball otherwise known as Chippy.
And this is the usual greeting:
me: hey sweets!!!!!!!
Chip: (shrieks) (I suspect he's saying, "i love u forever!")
me: How was your day?!! (i tend to talk really loudly to him)
Chip: (shrieks again) (this time saying, "you are great!!")
then, i realised something different..!
He had his fore-leg lifted off the ground, as if saying hi. And i went crazy again.
Me: ooooooh....u are saying hi to meeeeeeeee!!!! How intelligent!
Chip: "yea, just like you!" (ok, he didn't say that)
Then for the rest of the nite, i remained amazed that his arm was up. Till i realised that he was actually in pain. And that his leg was hurt. sigh.
today my dad brought him to the vet and he's a happy dog again.
We have come to the end of the most exciting story ever. The End.

whoo hoo
i'm beat.
but smiling.
i was too lazy to blog. I spent time scrolling thru the past entries instead and really was glad that i actually started this blogging thing. There are things i don't want to forget. But i take it upon myself to record the good things. The blessings. And the days when i feel happy but have no idea why.
As for the days that sucked and the days when i feel like vomitting from the pain, it's also in this blog. ha. only that they are in code words. only i wld noe. not that i want to purposely remember those, but they put me in good standing and strengthen me for good days to come.
I put my trust in You and Your peace shall reign in me.

Balai rocked.
I want to learn Bahasa Indonesian. I like Indonesia, for all i've seen of it so far la. But i need to devise something such that even if i spend prolonged periods of time there, i can breathe fresh air. Not some PSI 500 kinda haze.
Balai rocked. And You know You're behind it. Thanks. I never thought that an isolated place can bring out such honesty in people and myself too.
Everyone should go to Balai. Alternatively, everyday we should have cell-group worship. Rocks my world. I'm sure Yours too. heh.
ok, this is a bedtime blog. I'm actually not gonna watch soccer. My future lies in my sleep. As u can see, all the lines of thought are not making sense. I need to be awake. Forms C and other tax issues are bursting into my face. Loves it. =) ok, enough nonsense. nite.
By the way, the feet are doing good. The cast is off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But i need to learn how to walk again. To beautiful feeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet.

Pleased i am. =)

Cheryl and her feet
My well cast feet have been doing a pretty good job carrying me about town. I managed to shop on Saturday and today. i'm pleased. Although the walking did make me feel sore, it wasn't pain. And day by day, they feel stronger. Based on the rough estimate of 4-6 weeks in cast, i have 3 weeks more to go, max. And in the next few weeks, i have already planned a shopping/sight-seeing holiday to Jakarta and a mission trip to Tanjong Balai (an island of Indonesia). Yes, all in cast and those ugly astronaut shoes that some of u have seen.
I'm looking forward.
In the meantime, i can only look on in envy at shoes. I can't even try them on and i don't buy if i can't try. Plus i don't know if the size of my feet will change slightly with the shaving off of some extra bone during the op.
Yesterday i went to Robinson's. It's quite the aunties' shopping paradise. But if u r willing to dig deep and perservere the crowds, there are really some pretty good finds. J actually managed to get leather shoes (2 pairs!), pants and 2 shirts. All for a good deal. It was fun.
Today i went to the library and picked up some really cool books. It's not often i find the stuff i want, especially not at Library@ Orchard as it is well visited by the crowds and the bestsellers always get snapped up. But this time is different. I got my hands on The Undomestic Goddess by Sophie Kinsella, whose books i like to read. I'm pleased. =)
ok, enough of reporting. i'm masking my face now. heh. later gonna watch soccer. Monday is leave day. I feel good. =)

happy me sad me
A very very precious friend of mine returned from London. She called today and i was ecstatic. I virtually screamed in my quiet office. "i miss you!" i screamed silently.
But she bore very sad news. A mutual friend passed away today. I was overtaken by shock. I didn't know what to say next. i felt like it stole every right i had to be overjoyed that a dear friend is back. It didn't feel right to be glad. I was sad.
I wouldn't pretend to be close to her. We are as close as people on the same rugby team. The difference is that i'm the substitute level. She's the player level. But she's also the fun player. I remember her coming up with devious plots to trick opponents. Most of the time, the plots just made everyone laugh and forget the nerves that were jittering before a match. She made substitutes feel like players.
She's dead. And it's sad. I didn't expect to be affected. But i was. And it hurts. It hurts to see a young life ended. And it sucks that i know her. Even though not that well.
I was telling my Dad today (my blood Dad), that i didn't use to think that long life was such a big deal. And he asked me why. And i said that it's cos from the days i was in Sunday school, we were taught that heaven is a wonderful place ( i can even sing the song) and that we should hate the world. But today, i really give thanks for my earthly life.
I came so that you may have life. And life abundant.

tee hee hee
i apologise. I couldn't find a better title. i didn't sleep the entire nite.
This is what i did:
-i altered this unwearable skirt. Now it is wearable. i mite even wear it to the office tm. But trust me, nothing goes with bandages and bulging toes.
-i mended my sister's bag. The zipper came out and i (skilfully) sewed it back. I didn't tell her. so she mite suspect it's the elves.
-i watched about 5 episodes of Desperate Housewives and cried about 3 times cos i was so touched. can u believe just how mad i am?
-i also altered this dress i have. Initially unwearable cos it had this hot pink thing, which i think is major tacky. I replaced it with a black sheer ribbon. I tink it's presentable now so i mite wear it for grad nite.
Quite productive eh? This way, i'l be very sleepy tonite and i'l sleep early and be bouncy and cheery for work tm! Now i'm just waiting for B to call me to tell me "time for church!!!"
I love church. Thank You. Because You live, i can face tomorrow. I take delight in singing Your praises. =)

(thinking about) Running
I had my surgery on 18 May 2006. I can run in 6 months' time. that will be from 17 November 2006. Gasp. I was just watching the replay of a soccer match on TV. And watching the players sweat it out, look so lean, run and look like it's nothing makes me so wanna run. Suddenly, i miss my lunch sessions at the gym.
Why should u run?
Well, if u weigh about 50kg and u run for 30 mins at a jogging pace, u burn about 300 calories.
Let's do some math.
1g of fat = 9 calories
1 kg of fat = 9000 calories
1 lunch session = 40 mins (i take 20 mins to change, bathe and run to and fro the gym)
40 mins of running = 400 calories (approx) (my treadmill says otherwise)
9000/400 = 22.5 lunch sessions to burn 1 kg of pure fat.
22.5/3 = 7.5 weeks (assuming u give up 3 lunches in a week)
7.5 weeks < 2 months.
PURE FAT. wow. think about it. That's the weight of 1 litre of water and the volume of about i dunno how many butters. And there u have it, in PURE FAT. inviting eh? We haven't even considered what a fat-burning machine u will be if u reduce food intake.
OK, this is it. I'm running once my doc says ok.
All this is assuming u run as slowly as me (no one does, i'm a very slow runner). But hey, if u run a little faster, u will burn more.
As u can see, i'm v bored. It's a Saturday and i'm home. Everyone else has plans but here i am. Bah. ok, i'm going to make another skirt, then watch OC.

Run a marathon at 100m pace
That was a phrase J was telling me someone said to him. It left an impression on me. I'm still thinking about it. The fitness required, the determination, the desire.
Who wld have guessed that a lazy Friday (my final MC day) wld be a rather interesting one?
I woke to the alarm ringing. Something i haven't done for the last 4 days. I was due for an appt with my foot doctor. I'm going to see what the feet look like.
Me: eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. my feet look so disgusting!
Nurse: ai ya, of course la. It has only been 8 days since the surgery. Even plastic surgery takes longer. But after a while, bomp! (i have no idea what it stands for), u look beautiful!
I was tempted to ask "how u know?", but decided to hold myself.
I continued asking stupids questions like "how come like that huh?" as she took off the existing dressing and put on the new one. Blood oozed out. And i went "eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee" again.
Nurse: ai ya, don't worry! that's old blood!
i can't decided which is worse.
Anyway, where the doctor had made a cut, my skin was held together with black stitches. The skin was creased and very ugly.
My doctor showed me what he did throught the X-ray screen. My big toe was practically sawed apart by him and left to grow back together in time to come. In the meantime, i just have to wear the bandage and when i go out, i have really big shoes.

Blue black feet
Yes, unpretty indeed. And to add, my bandages are getting grey and dirty. Not to mention my toes! ok, i shan't go there. Just now i attempted to post a letter. So i walked to the MRT station. Only to regret it. heh. What was usually a 7-minute brisk walk turned out to be a 25-minute trot. I had to take breaks cos i started to feel my bones protesting. Ok, i'm sorry and will never do it again. (not until the doc gvs the green light at least)
On another note, i had a very nice day. Cos i found out as i was reading the morning paper, that i, having the privilege to be home on a weekday afternoon, can catch American Idol finals live, direct off satellite! yep, so tt cheered me up a bit.
And then, i met Z online and had a very nice chat. Big hug, my dear girl. And ur writings are so mesmerising. In case u wanna do advertising, i think u can. But i think u can do a lot of things. heh.
On a final note, i'm a happy girl cos tonight my cell-group is coming to my place. Cos my beautiful feet are durable enough to travel yet. These pple are so adaptable. Thanks. Ok, i gotta go get dinner. *growl (says the tummy)

Oh beautiful feet
Yes, in my quest for beautiful feet, and before u tink i'm really the sort who'll throw my life away for beauty, it was on the doctor's advice. The title of this entry can also be 'Oh functional feet". But it sounds weird doesn't it?
Heh.
I admitted myself into Gleneagles on Thursday early morning at 6am. The surgery was scheduled to be at 730am. My dad dropped me as he had a flight to catch at 8am. I didn't expect myself to be so scared. I thought it'l be nothing. I mean, it's not anything has changed. But i felt very alone. And the idea of GA (general anasthesia) scared me further.
I did the necessary, including handing my Letter of Guarantee and Medisave form, and allowed the counter staff to make a copy of my IC. Then, 2 steward-like Bangladeshi guys, nice and politely led me to my room 808. They taught me how to use the locker and how to adjust the bed, then they left me.
I lay on the bed, staring at the ceiling light. I thought i had time to catch a wink. But in like 5 minutes, an auntie-like voice sounded "cheryl...". Well, the nurse had come with operating dress (really just a piece of cloth with strings). So i changed and put my stuff in the locker. And within minutes, i was being wheeled into the theatre. I wanted to cry. I felt like a little girl again.
The threatre is just like what we see on TV. Bright and clinical. Everyone was chirpy and happy, poking fun at one another. (according to B, "it's how Grey's Anatomy!") Seriously, i wouldn't noe cos i don't watch. I kept asking, "Are u my anasthestist?" But most of my answers were like "No, but he's coming soon." "No, he's much shorter".
When he finally came, it was, again like on TV. He had a comforting voice. And spoke more slowly than the rest of the pple in the room. He explained what he was going to do. I asked him if there was any chance that i might sleep forever, i.e. die. And he said no. Then i asked if i might wake up halfway. He said no again and i was satisfied. He then proceeded to 'find my vein' and when he finally came to the final jab, he said, "Cheryl, this is it. Do u drink? What do u drink?"
i said, "erm...i like red wine, Baileys..yea, that's about it." "Ok, this is going to feel like 4 red wines with 2 Baileys ok?" "Ok."
And then i felt it. Then, like some drunk shit, i said "oooooooooooh. i feel it now. I'm floating..." Then i shut my eyes.
I as i was being wheeled out of the threatre. I recognised the bright lights. And then the pain hit. It was so so bad. I don't even know how to describe it.
I fell back to sleep under the influence of the drug.
I next awoke to an overwhelming pain that made me cringe as if i was having spasms. I was on a drip that administered painkiller constantly. The surgeon came by, saw my state. And instructed the nurse to increase the dosage. The painkiller attempted to reduce the pain. It also left me weak and groggy. En, B, P and D came by to see me. I felt so loved. But i was so weak, i could only open my eyes a bit and fall back to sleep, with my mouth wide open.
The nurse urged me to eat. and i wanted to kill her. Cos i was not able to. The painkiller had reduced all my muscles to zero. It rendered me unable to musticate my food. Or even swallow. I could only give thanks that all the oral painkillers were paired with anti-gastric pills.
By the middle of the next day, i was much better. Pain visited in momentarary pricks that brought tears, but the threat to kill was much less likely. i was also able to be taken off the drip. I could eat too. But hospital food is tasteless. And to add to my inactivity, i didn't really have reason to eat.
I stayed another night. I was not able to move an inch off my bed. I depended on the bedpan to pee. I had no shit. Perhaps i was truly scared shitless. ha. It was a Saturday that i was discharged. My sis came to bring me. It felt good going home. Cos i was starting to feel bad for troubling everyone to come and visit me/ take care of me.
Now i'm home. With a grand total of 5 days of MC. I am bored to tears. I actually want to work. But this actually gives me time to blog. And laze around. And sleep. Now my feet looks like this:

Yea, the toes are swollen from the water retention. I haven't seen the work of the surgeon. I only get to this Friday. Can't wait. Will show u soon. yippee.

Can't wait. Will show u soon. yippee.

Chippy
Chippy is my black furry dog with an insatiable appetite and the saddest, sweet eyes. I came home to an excited dog, as usual. J got on with his usual greetings. and a little more.
J: yo Chips, wassup.
(pauses)
wow. you have the amazing ability to make the whole place smell like you.
Chippy: (silence)
We proceed upstairs. And Chippy races along, overtaking us. (He likes to be first, then wait at the top of the stairs) Unfortunately, he trips.
J: How is it possible that you trip when u have 4 legs?

random sia
well well, i've been wanting to blog for the longest time. In some odd way, it's a form of release. And it is fast becoming a luxury because of its rarity. I know it sounds unbelievable. But in the office, i'm not comfy with blogging. And when i get home, i don't like to find myself staring at some screen since i've done it for an entire day.
Here i am. at 6.03 am on a Sunday morning. i blame the ice milk tea i had today at 3pm. Yes, tea has that effect on me. I dunno. it's not all the time. i suspect it's some combination with milk and sugar that sends me bouncing off the walls. And yes, i was one happy girl today.
I had planned to wander about town on my own. But in the end, the plans were pleasantly foiled as i ran into my sis and LK. Ended up wandering about town with them. And chatting to my heart out. For all the amount i talk, i sometimes miss talking. Can u believe that?
Came home to watch the Elections results. exciting stuff. Seriously, i never used to think so much about our government. But with this round of elections being one of the more hotly contested ones, i find myself being interested to read more, hear more. Sad to say, i don't have many opinions regarding the government that i can call my own. But i'm learning, and thinking.
I remember on some random Monday morning, i was trotting to work, rather happily. Before u all think i am mad, do nothing at work, or simply a workaholic, it's not the case, i assure u. I'm sometimes happy for no good reason. I don't burst into smiles or some shit, i just secretly smile to myself. It's like, if my heart could wink, that's what it did. A cheeky one. (I understand that i'm sounding mad)
So i told myself, that i have to blog about this, lest i forget that such good days have been bestowed on me. i will sing of His mercies, forever i will sing!
On another more personal note, my Japanese roomie, M, has returned to Japan. Initially, it was odd returning to an empty room. Cos i had gotten used to coming in and saying "hey". Now i don't. I still change in my bathroom even tho i don't have to anymore. It had been a great learning experience. While i didn't learn any Japanese, i did learn more about Japanese people. More importantly, i had found a friend. I don't actually think i'm an easy person to live with. And i didn't expect myself to find it easy to live with someone who started out being a stranger. But i did. And it was a smooth and pleasant experience. Now with the extra bed moved out and half my wardrobe returned, my room feels more spacious. Welcome all who wanna drop by and hang out!
Another meaningless thing i have to update u all about is my rebonded hair!!! i did it. finally. i've been thinking about it for the longest time. But didn't do it cos i didn't fall into the catagory that was commonly named 'candidates for re-bonding'. What i mean is, many people i sought opinion from felt that i didn't need to as my hair was not wavy. But now i look neater. The change is not drastic. But i actually look like i bother to comb my hair. Isn't that great?
Finally, i need to buy a pair of gold shoes to match the gold handbag i had recently acquired. In case u think i am Miss Ar-Piang, i'm not ok! my handbag is a matt, light gold shade. Very nice. Got chance i show u. And cos my bags NEED to have matching shoes, the urgent task is to get gold shoes. Perhaps Monday i'l go and get. Today i did see stuff i like. Just didn't buy. i wanted to be sure. hee.
You have come to the end of my blog entry. In case u are wondering, this is my bimbo outlet. Is it not obvious enough? heh. Thanks for entertaining me. i'm most pleased! =)

Early morning Monday....blues?
my sis returned from Hong Kong on Monday. I mean, really late on sunday nite. I crept into her room at 730am. A time considerably late for most, but my sis was still snoozing.
me: eh, u not working today meh?
sis: working..
me: wah. then u don't wan to wake up ar?
sis: waking up....
me: wakey wakey!!
sis: ai ya...
me: it's time to work! whoo hoo! time to work time to work! ( i start prancing around her room in my most graceful ballerina steps.)
sis: shhhhhh.....
me: but it's time to work! it's great to work!!!!!!!!!!!! (in an opera voice, Singapore Idol reject-style)
sis: GET OUT!
seriously, that's what younger sisters are for. You hardly see them (i only see my sister in church on Sundays. And yes, we live next to each other), and when u do, u should scream at them. All because they innocently tried to get you psyched up for Monday work. Talk about family ties.....(huge dramatic sigh)

hello to you
I really shouldn't b awake at this hour. But i am. i wan to blog. But i'm so sleepy. I've been scraping by on very little sleep. like 4 to 5 hours every day. and i tink this won't do. but this week isn't goin to be much better. cos smack in the middle of the week, is a very important Arsenal match.
Last nite i met P for dinner. And i told her that i need to be non-working people once in while. Cos they keep me in touch with reality. Yea. that's it. In case you think that it's all about work, it's not. It's all about you. And in this case, it's all about me.
It's all about how much i'm enjoying life, how much i'm learning, how much i'm loved and how much i'm loving. The list continues, how much i read, how much i sing, how much i impart. It's also about how much i laugh (do u remember the last time you did?), how much i run, how much i sleep and of course, how much i shop.
if you, like many others, think it's about how much u work and how much u earn, and how much OT u do, u're mistaken. or so i tink. there's more to it. i promise.
Tomorrow is sat. and i'm geared up to shop. i wan to walk the streets. i don't have to buy anything. just walk and see and maybe buy. heeeeeeeeeee. but the bones in my feet can't take it anymore. i mite visit the doc soon and see if i'm due for a corrective surgery. sigh. i'm a fine example of a girl who throws away her toes for the sake of her beautiful pointy heels.
Mayb tm i will bathe my Chippy. Ok, i shld stop blabbering. i'm goin to bed. i'm sleeeeeeeeeeepy. bye for now. it's just a report to say i'm still around. heeeeeeee.
Oh, and i forgot to drop a blog on my important day. 9 March. my birthday. in case u forgot, it's fine. I still love u. and i noe u love me toooooooo. i'm mad. ha. =)

Leap
while i was dancing today
i saw You
and how You cried
pleading that You may not die
the death i was meant to die
how You begged
beads of bloody sweat
i dance the steps
that were choreographed for You
for me
the dance You danced
so that my feet would not only walk
but leap
i am eternally grateful
p, i stole this from ur blog. it touched me so much i teared.

Just an update
If u have stopped reading my blog, i don't blame u. If some blogger updates only like twice in a year, i would stop reading too.
Anyway, i'm really supposed to be sleeping. But i refuse to. I don't noe y. it was supposed to be a fun nite. Not exciting kinda fun. Just the normal kind of couch potato fun. i'm currently cravin to be a couch potato. But the sofas at home are not comfy enough. sigh. i'm just full of complaints.
Was just reading M's blog. And i realise that i miss America. lots. i miss the money i had. the holidaying. the shopping. the frequency at which i go "wow!". I was just recounting to a friend today about how my tour to CNN was. And in turn he told me about his internship at SPH. it was nice. it also made me remember the day we walked to the Time Warner building. Just as we turned left on 5th ave to Columbus Circus and it started to snow. Nice bite-size snow balls falling. I remember thanking Daddy for allowing me to witness snow at such a nice place. It was also one of the rare times we actually woke early (cos we had to catch the CNN tour) and the place wasn't so crowded yet. I miss it.
Now my life is a routine. An effort is required to make it interesting. I make a conscious effort not to watch TV or stare into space when i've nothing to do. I need to find more events at which i can go "wow". His mercies are new every morning. Thank You.
I actually have so many things to do. I need to bathe my poor dog. I want to colour my hair. I want to go shopping. I want to hang out with you. Hold your hand. bah.
But instead, later i'm going running. I will run for an hour. Until i can breathe no more. Then i'l bathe. A hot one. I'm even contemplating going back to the office to finish up that small bit that keeps bothering me. But i shall not be obsessive.
I know it's in store for me. And i claim it everyday. My princesshood is mine to keep. My blessings run after me.
I want very light brown streaks in my hair. I want it long and soft. Tomorrow i'l have it. Yours will be blue. Shall we watch the Fulham match?

Chinese New Year
Chinese New Year flew by. And i haven't even organised photos for my US trip. Disgusting hor. Anyway, before CNY, i was dreading its arrival. Cos i didn't wan it to end. i feared the end of holidays. But now that life is pretty much back to normal, i'm feeling fine. Thank God. I thank Him everyday. whoo hoo. i'm truly feeling like a princess. anyway, since looking at pics is more interesting than me talking away. here it is.

Shopaholic Me
So i spent a lot of money in New York. But actually, i didn't buy that much. U noe that when one has to repeat clothes from her 4th day at work!! What a catastrophe. And my office is really cold. So oddly enough, while i was shopping today, i actually attempted to find clothes that are not 100% cotton. Ha.
Today i went shopping alone. Such bliss. I walked quickly, zipping in and out of shops, feeling most pleased. It's not always that i like to shop alone. But because i was determined to get something, i had to be efficient. And in a bid to beat the crowd, i reached town at 1030am. i walked around till about 8pm, no less. i feel so happy. the purchases of the day include:
one Mango blazer
one cream cropped cardigan
one pair of patent brown leather pumps from Xodus
24 hangers
i'm short of an alarm clock. I NEED an alarm clock. and a reliable one at that. There's too much at stake. i'm looking forward to tomorrow. i want to go to church.
By the way, i have every intention NOT to mention my work life on this blog. For a few reasons:
a) this is my bimbo outlet. and anything to do with work does not coexist with any tinge of bimbo-ness
b) i think it's a very good check for work-life balance. Not that if u have nothing to talk about, u have no life (or is that it?) but rather, by lending some focus to other things, i'm hoping it'l keep me grounded and in touch with reality.
c) i do have other things to talk about. ha. like my shopping. like my USA trip, which i haven't gotten down to sorting out.
i need to pack my life. it's no longer just my room. it's my sister's room which i have terrorised. Now a good quarter of my sis' room is filled with my stuff. sigh. i also need to pack my computer. it's starting to slow down, now laden with music and photos. i'm goin to move everything to Poddie. i realise that i keep talking about doing things. but i don't actually get down to it. but this time i think i need to le. with CNY approaching. boo.
when i actually start getting things goin, i WILL post pictures. heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

what are u? suaku??
So there's this new club in town. I kinda know of it. I mean, i'm really quite a cool kid. And for a tax associate, a major cool one. haha.
I was chatting with my not-so-cool auditor friend
(kidding, cos i was proven sorely wrong)
P: hey! i'l be meeting the girls at MOS!
me: cool.
P: wanna?
me: sure.
lunch?
for those of u in the same boat, as in the "Mos Burger" boat, some updates: MOS stands for Ministry of Sound, a new club at Clarke Quay. Which i tink is strong competition for Zouk as my fave club. One place where u can keep dancing for 2.5 hours. Cool stuff. check it out soon.

Post America Frenzy
Everyone i run into today asks me how my trip was. And i tell them it was gooooooooood. It was! I can't say i loved every moment. But i suspect it's really close. I had a very nice time. Thanks to those involved. You know who u are. =)
Now that my trip is over, and i've landed in the land of reality, there's work to be done. And limited time.
-pluck/trim/neaten eyebrows--done.
-send M's parcel--done.
-send out M's postcard to M'sia
-clear room and fit in new clothes--need 5 hours?
-go running--i actually can't wait. Just that the rain and swollen left foot is holding me back.
-go through all the photos and decide which to print out--5 hours?
-compile my scrap book before my memory fails me.--20 hours? (trust me, it takes very very long)
-bathe chippy--i'm happy his hair is long and fluffy. but it comes with a price.
-meet D to get stuff and pass her hers.
-colour my hair again.--i tink i want it a shade lighter. just a shade.
-meet G and Q to pass their presents.
-return all the winter clothing and bag i borrowed.
-do a breakdown of my USA expenses.--i dread this the most.
it's all this for now. looks like i have to get busy. But before that, i need to eat some papaya. =)

This is home, truly
the moment the ships out at sea and the golf courses and chalets near Changi (i assume) came into view from the airplane, i found myself smiling.
It had been a long 12plus hours flight from London Heathrow, following an overnight transit. I was pleased to be home. The feeling of familarity and security is well appreciated by me. Though at the same time, i had a deep craving for bagels with fruit and walnut cream cheese dressing. The ones we had in Brooklyn. yums.
I made a mistake with my return time. And this rendered me transport-less. But i was determined not to spend on a cab. Particularly since i was well aware of airport surcharge and peak hour surcharge. argh. so i called everyone i knew. Dakooma came to the rescue.
In the process of waiting, i changed into a singlet and shorts. A luxury that must not be taken for granted. I was pleased to find myself looking at bare legs and feet. Only that my left foot is swollen, from the aftermath of joggin in Central Park for an hour with bad shoes, and topped off with loads of walking. And perhaps water retention from long flights? i have no idea.
Seeing chippy was the next best thing. He looks so cute. i suspect my dad had him prepared in my favourite hairstyle for him. Fluffed up paws and more hair on the top of his head. He welcomed me with much excitement. and his signature move: peeing. sigh. what can i say?
I unpacked rather quickly. And found that the stuff is rather manageable. Now i just have to decide what clothes in my wardrobe is to go, in order to make space for the new ones. But for now, i have to go pick my parents. They are back today too! yippee. =) laters.

Manhattan--the last moments
U won't believe this, but today, D n i went joggin in Central Park! it was sub-zero in the morning. We actually woke up. And we actually ran. A grand total of 1 hour 5 minutes. But in the beginning, i didn't tink i cld make it. It was freezing. And as u run to try to keep warm, ur ears become really cold from the breeze. D n i had to run into Duane Reade to get gloves.
i wore a singlet, a long-sleeve tee and a wool sweater, 2 pairs of tights, a pair of track pants and socks. I only perspired in the last 10 minutes of the jog.
But it was an experience. A non-tourist one at that. and perhaps my only chance to run in such conditions for a long long time.
Then we met M for shopping and breakfast/lunch. Visited H&M at Herald Sq, which is way more organised. Also dropped by Forever 21. And i kicked myself for not coming earlier. Cos the variety is very large and for some odd reason, they are fully stored with summer clothes. Something most appropriate for Singapore-bound me. And the stuff are cheap!
Then we went to Strawberry and a few other stores. I got really bored. Cos the stuff started repeating. I didn't have things to buy and i wasn't hungry. That pretty much rules out a lot of things to do.
Finally, we decided to go to Brooklyn. And it was really nice. Graffiti and bagels and vintage shopping. I bought a sweater from 'Brooklyn Industries'. I was telling M that "now i have a souvenier from Brooklyn'. And D says it's a brand. hmmm....yips. coolio.
The day ended with meeting up with friends from Melbourne for a Congee dinner. And visiting their hotel. It was ok. We laughed a lot.
More to say. But perhaps another entry. =)

The most uneventful day in Manhatten
The motivation to blog is odd this time. It's cos it's so usual that i almost definitely will forget this when i arise tomorrow.
The day started early because J was leaving for home. We didn't sleep at all. He was busy with packing, loading the new ipod and basically doing the last minute bits. 5am we left the Bronx for JFK Terminal 4, where he successfully checked in about 100kg of luggage with no extra charge. He had a total of 3 hand-carry pieces, but he didn't attract any attention. After checking in, we went to Macs where he took his last American macs breakfast, M had her McGriddle, D his hash browns with jam. And me? the usual hot chocolate. I love Macs here.
We followed J visually all the way as he cleared the security checks, which was particularly tedious for him as he had lots of luggage, a laptop that always calls for extra scrutiny and u have to remove shoes. Upon witnessing that, i've decided that i'l be wearing flip flops to the airport when i leave.
Bye J. Manhatten does feel weird without u. D and i are a lot quieter. hee.
M, D and i returned to the Bronx where we took a longer nap than we had planned. Headed to Chinatown at 2pm where M had her US$25 haircut at Pell Street. She looks great. Nice, cropped fringe with well trimmed tresses around the face.
We then trotted around the Hong Kong-like Chinatown for a bit. Had hot ginger tea and $0.70 Po Lo Buns with Red Bean filling. Nice.
We dropped by Bloomingdale's to kill time before dinner. Bloomingdale's is an extremely well-organised departmental store. Slightly more classy than Macy's. Way too pricey for M and I. Moreover, i really don't need to buy any more things.
Then we proceeded to Spring Street where we walked into random shops that sold pricey, second-hand vintage items. Then we went to queue for a table at the Hole in the Wall Jap restaurant. M's Malaysian friends joined us. Joanne, Chanyi, Candy and Elaine. All 7 of us spent a grand total of US$54 at the restaurant. Average food with average ambience with average service. Extremely forgettable stuff.
Then we headed home. Home in the Bronx.
Tomorrow will be another relaxing day. Walking the streets downwards from Grand Central. Hope to walk more. So that i can burn the crazy amounts of food and hot chocolate i'm consuming. =)

Cheryl takes Manhattan. then goes home?
With J spending his last day here, the reality of going home is beginning to creep in. And the coincidence of me receiving an email to ask me to go for a medical check-up and start work on the 16th is depressing. it's this ache in ur bones that makes u wanna cringe at the same time. argh. it's not pleasant at all.
i'm waiting for my mates to wake to visit Liberty, the Intrepid, the UN building and maybe even watch a Broadway show. the reason for the cluster of activities is testament to our last-minute, procrastinating nature. sigh. now we have to rush.
for my singaporean darlings, i'l be landing in dear ole Changi T1 at 6.30pm 11 Dec, Wednesday. it's too soon. i REALLY wanna see my family and friends and chippy. But i just can't help connecting work and returning home. ok, i'm goin to stop complaining.
ON a brighter note, i shall talk about my purchases (again.) Last nite, while J, M and D watched Phantom, i walked around Times Square on my own. I could not bring myself to spend another US$53, especially since i watched it just last year on London Broadway.
Guess wat i bought? U'l never b able to.
I bought an OC tee. It has Summer on the front, dressed as Wonder Woman. I'm how pleased. It was expensive (US$27). So after contemplating for 2 hours, i still didn't buy it. But after i met them after the show (which they loved), we went together and i gave in. whoo hoo. i'm how pleased.
i also bought another Paris Hilton-related tee. I'm a Paris Hilton fan. yes yes, this is my bimbo outlet. But when i'm not bimbo, i'm still her fan. heeeeeeeeeeee.
ok, i'm goin off now. when i get back, i'l provide a nice chronological blog of my visit. either that, or i'l pass ard a hard-copy scrapbook. i love u all. =)

Happy Birthday
my blog is one year old.
and i'm fiercely proud of it. it has served as my bimbo outlet, my thought-straightener, and my frustration bin. Well, if u have noticed, my blog is kind and happy. Well, it's cos the angry ones are saved as drafts. but there aren't many of them. cos when i have the sense to pen everything down, it just means i'm not all that angry.
when i started the blog, i wasn't v happy. but things are different now. i tink 2005 is a big thing for me. And i tink attending New Crea is a significant part of it.
Anyway, so now i'm in New York rite. And just last nite, i was lamenting the overspending. And expressing my fears about the lack of money as we approach the end of the trip. gosh. And guess wat. today i went shopping again.
But they were pretty good deals i have to say.
1 Polo Ralph Lauren shorts $4
1 100% silk diagonal stripes skirt for sis $12
1 "Dirty Girl" note pad and panty gift set for sis $0.99
1 pants for work $15
sigh. am i scary or wat. wait till i show u the entire list of things i bought. u might puke. it's really not funny.
I also visited the Guggenheim Museum today. The current exhibition is on Russia. And i have to say, my general knowledge of Russia renders me very inadequate to fully appreciate the works of art. But the visit was a pleasant one.
I also went to see the reservoir at Central Park. Initially, i didn't really want to go because i went in Summer 2003. And i loved it. But there wasn't any point (or so i thought) to visit it again, espcially since it's winter. But i was blown away by the view of it today. it almost looked fake. And i'm once again reminded of the wonder of my God's creation. thanks.
my day ended earlier than usual as i got frightened by the dark and it was raining. Not that rain scares me, but it did have the effect of clearing the roads of people. So i came home early.
Met P online. P is definitely one skinny present from Daddy. And it was refreshing to talk to her. it was good.
New York is definitely becoming a livable city for me, something v different from what i thought when i came 2 years ago. while i do not feel as safe as in Singapore, London and Hong Kong, i like the congestion, the concentration of activity, the wide variety of fashion and food choices and the efficient transport system. I also like it that America is quite a world on its own. It appears to be a lot more encompassing towards businesses and differing cultures, as opposed to Singapore. But what i know is from a month's visit, prolly too little to pass a complete judgement. But i'm happy.
and the funny thing is, i eat very tasty, high quality asian food here. i can't say it's authentic cuisine, cos most of the time, i don't really noe what's authentic what's not. But it's like, the ingredients are fresher, the portions more well adjusted to the price, the service, etc. But it doesn't apply to all the food places of course. The other thing here that i like is that the McDonald's have hot chocolate and a really huge cup costs US$2.00. And believe me, it's a must-have after u r so frozen from walking in the cold and from breathing in very cold air. A gush of nice, hot, sweet chocolate liquid is most welcome. To me, much better than a meal of burger and fries.
All in all, i'm not exactly wanting to return to Singapore. But at the same time, i noe i'm not cut out for this weather and i really miss chippie and my family. Perhaps it's the idea of starting work that's making me apprehensive about going back. Starting work makes me nervous. sigh. let's not go there. i'l enjoy my NY trip then see how.
enough blabbering for now. =)

Back in NY
i have so many things to say. so many photos to share. but they are not with me. and i have shitloads of things to settle. it's amazing how traveling, more specifically backpacking is a lot of admin work.
and i have to admit, the mindset we began with was not really in sync with wat's necessary. but as we go along, i tink we might just get better at this.
from this pt on, it's will b NY, NY, NY.
SF, Vegas and Cville are done. And, as of now, we haven't planned to venture out of NY. We think about it sometimes, but nothing is planned. Now various themes are swimming in my sleep-deprived mind. Rockefellar, Empire State, Ground Zero, SOHO, Broadway, Times Sq, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Guggenheim, 5th Ave, Madison, Statue of Liberty, Staten Island, Central Park, the 2 toy shops. Oh my, wat else did i miss?
of course, the shopping. we've shopped so much it's not funny. i return to Singapore with the fate of a slave. Even if i eat nothing, i need a few months to repay my debts. But for wat's it's worth, i'm pleased.
Purchases include:
1 Kenneth Cole shoes
1 Kenneth Cole boots
1 H&M coat
1 Nine West party shoe
1 Gap pants
1 Benetton suit
1 Gap beanie
1 Abercrombie slippers (free)
1 Polo Ralph polo tee (free)
1 "i'm naughtier than i look" tee (free)
1 J Crew singlet
1 Puma gym bag
1 UVA tee
1 H&M jeans
Not a lot hor? And it's not even Christmas. I still have the post christmas sale to go. Cool beans. Listing my purchases made me a bit happier.
Now i can go on to plan my NY trip. Pray for me. thanks.

things
my favourite bf bought a curtain, 70 tee-shirts, among other shirts, pants, jackets, laundry basket, etc. and yes, all of them are going back to Singapore.
Charlottesville
Well, the fact that i'm able to blog everyday is rather telling i have to say. Cville is a nice place. A nice cosy place that i suppose if u stay long enough, u can find urself calling it home. It has a quirky kind of character to it. But i do miss the pace of city life. And it doesn't help that everyone who's here is studying for exams. I feel rather intrusive. Too touristy for my own good.
I miss things being within reach. I miss being a little warmer. Though i tink the sights are very beautiful. Even if they are just trees outside the window. The skies are very clear and i love the mornings. Nice.
3 days isn't enough to judge a place. But from a 3-day pt of view, well, let's just say i'm ready to go. It's nice and all. And i'm glad to c Jem's life. At least i can appreciate some things better. Not all.
i bot myself a UVA tee to remember my visit here. got the white one. nice?

Now, i have to pack. The train leaves at 7.07am tm. Can u believe that i came here with 4 plastic bags of clothes? i just need to put them back into plastic bags, and then into my bag.
Thus the need to shop. SF here we come. =)

The most exciting things
The most exciting day of my life would have to be today!
Well, to begin, i had my first meal in Cville today. Indian buffet. for US$6.95. It was ok. i mean, it's not uncommon to find pple complain about the quality of Asian food abroad. This place certainly doesn't get this kind of feedback. The locals like it and the foreigners find it cheap enough.

I also attended church in the morning. 2 services, 2 different styles but 2 identical sermons.
ok, i have a bit more to say. but the speed of the com i'm using is amazing. It's bothering me. so yea, another time when i have more patience.

Nervous Traveller and her clueless brother.
I'm nervous.
yea. And i noe it sounds crazy. But i'l really miss my dad n mum n sis n bro. Esp my bro. It's the cross-roads for him. And i've really not done anything to help. I've sure given him a lot of pressure. Sigh. He'l always be the little brother. my little brother.
I tried asking him for his waist size so i can buy stuff for him.
Me: aye, gimme ur waist size le.
bro: for what?
me: then i can buy stuff for u mah.
bro: erm... just buy L.
me: what? i'm going to America le.
bro: oh. Then M lor.
sigh. He doesn't even know his jeans size. He thinks they all come in S, M and L. and he's 16.

Packing in progress
So i've started packing. And in the process, it's absolutely necessary to try on the clothes. Cos most of it (actually all) are borrowed. So i don't noe if i fit/look ok/feels warm. I guess it's hard to judge the feel warm part. Well, i had to switch on the air-con. Like seriously. Even tho i was just putting them on for a few seconds.
Well, now i'm overwhelmed with winter clothing. I have so much now i shall choose so they mix and match and have the most possible combinations. Cos as u noe, i'm not bringing so much clothes. Match as in with my beanie and gloves and muffler. ha. i'm mad. Anyway in the end also look the same. Once the jacket goes over, most things don't matter really. And if it rains, even better. I have this really thin, black windbreaker. I'l just look like the flasher in the rain. ha.
ok, back to packing. I'm startin to feel sleepy. argh.

Procrastinator
Sigh. since the last day of exams, i wanted to pack the rooms. Well, i did start. but the task got too daunting. i really can't see how i can ever finish it. unless i heartlessly decide that the entire pile is to be thrown away. cannot la. very waste.
I only managed to get through one year's worth of notes in SMU. At first, i told myself i was goin to dump them all. Since i wouldn't need them, will have no time to look through them and they will become outdated. However, when i saw those pages and pages of handwritten notes, doodles, and colours, i couldn't help but feel sentimental. So i made a compromise. I'l keep all the handwritten stuff and powerpoint slides. I'l throw all the articles and thick sets of journals. In end, i only managed to throw out a little bit. The pile of junk hardly diminished, after like 3 hours of work!
then i gave up.
cos on the other hand, i have so much research to do. with regards to my trip. like from the airport, i need to find the train station, and from there, the route. i need to map it out. and boy, it's hard work. now my neck is aching from staring at my lappy.
i really need to pack my room. cos when i return, i don't wan to come back to a junky room. and most of all, i don't wan my mum to go thru everything and i won't b able to find anything. arghhh.
i leave in 36 hours? and i'm not packed. i haven't even collected my air ticket! help. yes, tt's me.
ok, i tink i better get to work now. or i'l really really be coming to home to a junky house.
other than this, i'm most pleased about travelling. I can't wait to feel the plane take off. I can't wait for the landing. As for the in between, i'l just have to entertain myself. But i tink i'l knock out.
The pile of junk hardly diminished, after like 3 hours of work!
then i gave up.

the SMU graduate
ha. so that's me. assuming i pass everything this term. obviously i don't hope to just pass. anyway, everyone was in high spirits even before the paper began. I think it's cos everyone was equally clueless about what should have been prepared and were discussing how they are goin to do badly. u noe la. the usual, modest pple.
smart me lugged the world to school cos it was open book. in the end, i only refered to 2 pages. sigh. i guess tt's the way it is. i'm home now, having lugged everything back. ha. i actually want to sell my textbooks. argh.
many many of my frens are employed. in fact, some of them start work in 2 weeks! can u believe it. sigh. i'm not that much better. talk about SMU trying to cultivate students who are different. i'm really not one of those different ones.
i had gone about dreaming, wishing about a different future. yet, here i am, already one foot in the conventional door. Coincidentally, B is also in my AMA class. She was in my kindergarden, primary school and now uni. Our parents are friends. And as i told her about my plans, she told me hers. Of course, hers are waaayyy more prestigious. (she beat me at my PSLE ok!) ha. but i felt so grown up. suddenly it's like i have to be independant.
i tink i'l miss SMU. like a lot a lot. not the building. but the life. i loved it. I can only take pride in that i have no regrets. I'm very happy with the stuff i've accomplished and by how much i've gained.
yay! now my exams are over! so my post-exam plans can materialise. But i'm so sleeeeepy. i didn't sleep much last nite. I was so jittery about the exam. coupled with the fact that i drank ginseng tea in the morning. that really killed it. I lay in bed, listening to my roomie cough her lungs out. She's sick la.
Ok, i'm actually goin to clear my room. and my sisters. but after i cut my hair. But i'l go n cut hair after i have my lunch. so yea. since my maid's cooking, i'l blog. ha.

today is another really nice day. i woke up promptly at 8am. without the alarm ringing. i tink i'm excited to study. i didn't want to disturb my roomie, who has completed her exams, was ill, and was snoozing away.

One more to go
One exam down. and one more to go. I felt ok about today. And i know it's not me at work, as usual. Thanks Dad. Ya so real.
And thanks bf, for those prayers.
I'm home now. Not zonked out entirely. Just v lazy to start. Which is bad. cos AMA needs a lot of work. But i need to sleep first.
After an exam, i have to sleep. It's like something that clears my mind and i can start again. It really works. Try it. Even if it's only for an hour or so.
I can't wait for friday. My last exam in SMU. I'm saying in SMU cos there's a nagging feeling that in my work in the future, i'l need to take some exams. I have no idea why i have this feeling. But i do.
Oh, and my flight to New York? it's materialising, along with a probable stop-over in London some more. Think i got time to run to the Harrod's in the waiting lounge? ha.
Can't wait. Perhaps i should really go n sleep now. Before i while away all my time again.

Home, truly...
Been going to school too much lately. Especially since there are not lessons. I go in hope of being more productive since in the lib, where there isn't my SATC, chippy, TV, bed, piles of magazines, novels, etc.
However, it's not working. Even without my lappy, i'm awfully distracted. By what, u may ask. U won't believe it. My own thoughts. Daydreams, worries, plans, the list goes on. I say my mind is well-developed. ha.
SO, today i'm staying home. My roomie went to school. I have the whole room, plus toilet to myself. And i feel so good. Yes, i'm blogging, not v productive. But i feel happier. And i tink that helps. in any case, if today turns out to be bad, i'l return to the City tm. ha.
Things Cheryl will do after her exams:
1) go gym with P.
2) go ____ with the other P.
3) clear my room.
4) sell unwanted stuff on Auctions.
5) sell sister's unwanted stuff on Auctions.
6) Plan US trip. Like seriously. At least have an idea of the things i wan to see.
7) note the sizes of pple i wan to buy things for. (if i don't ask u and u wan something, ask me.)
8) note Dad, Mum and bro's sizes.
9) meet Emily, P and S to borrow winter stuff. when my pics come out and my clothes don't fit, u noe i don't own them that's why. ha.
10) get backpack from A.
11) eventually pack.
12) trim/colour my hair
i'm sure there's some more. i will add later if need be.
For now.
1) read my psycho text.
2) prepare AMA stuff to print. (can u imagine? i haven't even printed them out!)
3) note my exam timetable
4) exam venues.
5) mayb bathe chippy.
sigh. lots to do. but not stressed. is that bad?
Norah is singing soulfully to me. the weather is good. I feel better than i did yesterday. I tink this is home. truly. heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

The Anal Character
I like Freud. Even though i don't profess to know all about him, from whatever i know, i really enjoy reading about his awfully quirky ideas and extreme views. I'm beginning to admire extremists.
Freud sees childhood development very important for understanding the adult. According to him, the newborn goes through a few stages, namely the oral stage, the anal stage, the phallic and genital stage. Every stage is characterised by a unique set of conflicts and when not resolved properly, will result in a troubled adult.
Of interest, as my entry title suggests, is the anal character. In fact, i was just wondering whether the 'u r so anal' originated from the Freud idea.
The Anal Character:
Stage in childhood: when the child attains bowel control. This is the time when toilet training begins. According to Freud, when a child is inhibited from defacating, as in the case of a parent who gets very upset when he accidentally loses control and is generally very rigid, will result in an adult who is compulsively clean and orderly, or stubborn and obstinate. in modern words, anal.
Seems crazy to you? well, a lot of his theories (to me) make sense. While i agree that they are sometimes groundless and often lacking in scientific evidence, i find them very creative. And very encompassing. and very extreme. ha.
The Oral character:
the Oral stage happens directly before the Anal one, taking place from birth to before attainment of bowel control. Pleasure is obtained through the mouth (thus the name), as in feeding. When it comes to the time for the child to move to the next stage, but the child refuses to give up the previous, some lingering attachments remain. A manifestation is thumb-sucking.
A resulting (conflicting) adult is one who has mouth-related problems, including smoking and bingeing. The character of the person is one who is often dependant on others, having a 'please feed/love me' kinda mentality.
do u fall in any of these? ha. don't worry. they are really not scientific. just interesting stuff only. in any case, if u buy Freud's ideas, it's really quite a pessimistic view. Cos then there's nothing u can do about someone who had a difficult childhood. Which i don't believe la. To a certain extent at least. =)

Lao Jiu: The Musical
It was nice. Really. I love the artistic bits and i thought they did it really well.
The story's about this boy, Lao Jiu. His name means 'number 9' in the family. The show begins with his parents pining for a boy, after giving birth to 8 females. And when he comes along, everyone's so happy and loves him loads. No one feels any jealousy and all his sisters hope to see him succeed one day. (in this aspect, i feel that the characters of the sisters are rather flat)
So u noe, all these expectations.
To add to it all, he was a very likely candidate for a prestigious scholarship.
And then he falls in love with the art of puppetry. And hopes to pursue it full-time. To heighten the urgency of learning it immediately at the expense of the scholarship is that the puppet master was about to die.
so yea. u noe la. this is how it goes.
The best bits were the times when he was supposed to be studying, but he daydreams instead. These are the 3 daydream parts (characterised by flashing disco lights):
1) 3 dancers appear with a fitness ball. Lao Jiu sings about atoms and physics. And the ball is bounced about him. And when he sings about waves (remember those things from physics class), they try to make the ball oscillate. It was a nice representation.
2) Lao Jiu sings about mathematics. U noe that lessson of inequalities? U draw this graph, then there are constraints provided for like y>4x + c then u have to elimate that area? then got a number of equations then in the end u have a small little area bound by the contraints?
yea, so the 3 dancers had a large piece of cloth. They used it to show shapes, like squares and rectangles. Then later as Lao Jiu ran about the stage, they held him back (like constraints). This is all done as Lao Jiu chanted about how he felt repressed by all the expectations on him.
3) the final one used steps that are on wheels. At first, he jubilantly steps from one to the other. And he sings about his studies. Then when he begins to describe art as an abstract thing, one that cannot promise a future, he starts to slip off the steps and clings tightly to them.
The representations are creative and not difficult to interpret. I was impressed by the artistic direction.
If anything, i felt the musical is very Singaporean indeed. nice. And to add to the pleasure, P watched it with me. whoo hoo.

dedicated to the 2 Ps
The 2 Ps in my life are very important to me. You noe who you are. You don't noe each other but i noe u both. And you have no idea how similar u are.
ur names start with P
u both are blur.
i tell u secrets that i can't bring myself to tell others.
and recently, something good happened to the 2Ps.
yes, i'm definitely your gushing partner. i'm honoured to be.
go on. I'm all ears.

2006!
2006 is a great year to start work! whoo hoo.
Exerpt from a Straits Times article today:
Bumper crop of long weekends next year
By Melissa Sim
THE 'Deepa-Raya' week may be over but here is the good news: There are seven long weekends to look forward to next year.
And with some careful planning, the savvy leave-taker can have 43 rest days by taking just nine days of annual leave. Next year's calendar is packed with long weekends because most of the public holidays fall on Fridays, Sundays or Mondays. For example, the first and second days of Chinese New Year, traditional public holidays, fall on a Sunday and Monday (Jan 29 and Jan 30), a natural long weekend. But workers also get an additional day off on Tuesday (Jan 31). This is because when a public holiday falls on Sunday, the next day is a public holiday. But since the second day of Chinese New Year is on Monday and is also a public holiday, the long weekend extends to Tuesday. It can stretch even further too - those who care to plan in advance can take three days of leave from Feb 1 to Feb 3 and get a nine-day break from Jan 28 to Feb 5.
Another bumper long weekend comes at the end of December, when there are another two public holidays back to back. Hari Raya Haji falls on Dec 31, a Sunday. The next day is New Year's Day, so workers get Tuesday off too. Aside from Dec 31, there is a second Hari Raya Haji holiday next year, on Jan 10. Islamic Fellowship Association secretary-general Ameerali Abdeali explained that this happens because the Muslim calendar, a purely lunar calendar, is 11 days shorter than the solar or Gregorian calendar. As the Muslim calendar does not have leap years to offset the number of days lost in the solar calendar, Muslim festivals move forwards through the solar calendar by 11 days every year.

bees and the garden
i just came back from church. so i'm overwhelmed from being preached to.
do u noe that by right a bumble bee is too fat to fly? i mean, goin by the size of its wings. but it does (i noe u noe). i found this site that explains how it works. http://www.doesgodexist.org/NovDec99/IsItPossibleForABumbleBeeToFly.html
and it was the humble bumble bee who helped King Soloman to differentiate the fake lillies from the real ones.
oh, and another thing:
suppose the Garden of Eden before Adam sinned was oh-so-nice and unthorny, do u tink durians would be round and smooth?
are u wondering what funny things i'm learning in church? ha.

my 1st (and prolly last) ASoc event
ASoc stands for Accounting Society. When they first started out, they didn't have a name. So they organised a naming competition. The winning entry was 'ASoc' and he walked away with S$100 cash prize. but i really can't complain. i could not have been more creative. Anyway, the name stuck.
This evening's event was really a get-together (networking) as well as the launch of the new mag, Accentuate. It was a pleasant evening. And u noe it's definitely a party of accounting students when:
1) nothing very spectacular happened.
2) given the options of dressing according to the theme or simply wearing white, most obeyed and wore white, the rest came in normal clothes. No one followed the theme.
3) the station games included "who can type the fastest" and "who can build a taller tower of chocolate coins (similar to Jenga)"
4) at the door everyone was given a card. on it written the name of one of the Big 4 accounting firms
5) u need to form groups of 4, a combination of all the Big 4, before u are allowed to proceed to the food
6) the invitation said "from 5pm till late" but everyone left after the lucky draw.

it's my dad's birthday. and marco's bday too. marco is the boy who lives in my house. my parents are his legal guardian. so we went to celebrate. it was a rowdy time at Jumbo. i had a lot of fun. and it came to the time when we needed to take pictures. An invited friend offered, since she wasn't exactly part of the family. let's call her W.
W: now how do i use this thing?
E (my sis' bf): erm.. look into the screen, make sure everyone is in it, then press this button (pointing to that button on every camera, digi or not)
W: wah. BenQ brand aye. I thought they only made computers? (there we stood, huddled together, smiling like dunno wat, waiting)
E: ya, can just press the button.
W: Oh, ok. (presses and releases immediately)
nothing happens.
W: how come like that ar?
everyone: u need to press and hold!!
*flash* and everyone relaxes.
W: can i let go now?

restful
a few nights this week, i experienced some difficulty sleeping. which is weird. it's not that i can't fall asleep. it's that i'l wake in the middle of the night, feel extremely energetic. if i were a braver person, i'd have gone running. that kind of energetic.
this morning, i woke at 10 am. church is at 11. so i lazed a bit and started to feel really sleepy. so i went back to bed. woke at 3. went for the 4pm service. i burnt my entire Sunday like that. can u believe it?
now i'm sleepy. sleepy enough to contemplate giving up my weekly dosage of The Apprentice. sigh. talk about wasting time.
*on another note, i think the service was tailor-made for me today. thanks Dad.

awesome days
Friday night had to be my best night in some time. I didn't do any homework. I went for fitness then i went to watch Goal! with P. And it really made me one smiling girl. Let's just say that there's very good reason why the movie is named Goal! rather than Goal. The exclaimation mark is absolutely essential.
Goal!'s about soccer. But u don't have to noe anything about it to enjoy it. You don't even have to like soccer. But the plot isn't the big thing here. It's the way the show is delivered. whoo hoo. Go watch it. =)
Just came back from an awesome dinner with friends. Guess where? Malaysia! ha. we drove all the way there can. the 10 of us had 4 crabs, 2 plate of XinZhou Beehoon, 1 Belacan sweet potato leaves, 1 hotplate tofu, 1 (huge) steam fish, 1 Cereal Prawns, 20 satay, 1 fried sotong, 1 3-layer pork. I tink that's it. Came up to RM257. Equivalent to S$11.70 for each of us. yums.

big world, big heart
1 Kings 4:29 And God gave Solomon wisdom and exceedingly great understanding, and largeness of heart like the sand on the seashore. (NKJV)
James 1:5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. (NKJV)
We always remember Soloman as the guy whom God gave loads of wisdom to. While that is true, sometimes we forget that He also gave a lot a lot of riches and the largeness of heart. This is so that he doesn't become proud or stingy.
ON a relatively unrelated point, today i attended a career talk by Boston Consulting Group (BCG). They are one of the 3 largest consulting firms in the world. And boy, i must say that i'm impressed.
Firstly, they are truly global, having 60 offices all over the world. But they really made an effort not to seem so unreachable by bringing along all the NUS and ONE ex-NTU partner along. Once again, i'm reminded that my world is really large.
Prior to this talk, i've been hearing about how it's really different studying overseas. The people that one meets, along with the experiences of being alone far from home, the intellectual banter that takes place, class discussions for really what they are (and not a contest to see who gets more participation marks) or even just hanging out with someone who comes from another country and speaks with another accent. My little world is slowly, (minimally u mite say), but surely growing.
Adding to that, having a Japanese roomie has also helped me to appreciate the idea of home, while reminding me that i belong to an increasingly mobile generation. It also made me wonder what it'l be like to venture so far without your family. And to add to the trauma, going to a place where the language, culture, food, climate, etc, is totally different. It really made me admire her. I thank God that while i continue to live in my room, not only my privacy doesn't feel invaded, i am enriched by the experience.
Coming back to the talk. So i was really impressed. Cos these people are obviously very smart, yet so unassuming. They don't try to bombard you with things like how it's so prestigious, u mite earn a lot of money, travel a lot, but rather, they present to you the facts in simple English, making little jokes that don't try to blow you away, but just to perk you a little. Everything's so natural. And in the midst, their love for the job and the experience they are living just by working for BCG just oozes. These are people who have souls. They love their work, and their life as well.
To be fair, i didn't attend any other talk prior to this. So perhaps everyone is so impressive i dunno. But from what i gather, maybe not. But i really liked everything about it. The technical side, like the presentation of the work they do, the kind of culture, the clients, the long hours in the 1st 2 years especially, the amount of travel such that you MIGHT just begin to dread it...i also liked the soft side of things. Like how the manager was dealing with the Q & A, but the junior associates (from as new as 6 months) respond when they feel a need to. the general feel was good.
So in my excitement, when my parents picked me up later in the night, i tried to relate the experience to them. This includes how BCG is like a big firm and they are oh so cool, blah blah. And naturally, i wanted them to go, "wow! really? that great!" or something to that effect. But that was not the response i got. i related this case BCG talked about during the presentation. It was about some really large petroleum firm that approached BCG to think of ways for them to cut costs by 50%, despite them already being the market leader in the region. And my dad started talking about how all the little convenience stores of Mobil in Singapore are being taken over by NTUC and how that's an example of a strategic move.
my 1st reaction was to go like, "Pa, it's different, the company that i'm talking about is really huge!" i immediately thought that he didn't understand.
But my sis (much later in the night) reminded me that i belong to a privileged generation that has the opportunity to understand and to realise that we belong to a world. And not just Singapore. Our parents on the other hand, were not privy to such opportunities.
I haven't seen the world. Nor experienced the kind of competition that will present itself should one be thrown in a foreign place. Not even close. Therefore, I can't even begin to imagine the kind of distances that may be faced by children who spend a full 4 years abroad and return in hope of revamping the family business, or simply to relate the bigness of the world to their parents. How?
I dunno. But this awareness, along with the constant reminder that wisdom (I happen to think that realising that there's loads more to learn is wisdom) needs to be accompanied by the 'bigness of heart' humbles me. And made me realise that whether or not that 'big world' exists, they are the ones who gave me the chance to even begin to find out more about it.
*on another note, parents have fully accepted that audit's not for me. And i tink that for them, it's a rather significant step to take. they are pretty cool eh.

blogging drought
so i haven't been bloggin much hor?
the holidays have passed. but it was filled with another take-home test and an individual assignment and the compilation of a group report. it didn't feel like a rest. but i've come to realise that it's a common complaint of SMU students in general. every year it only gets worse.
the brother is discharged. he came home last Friday i tink. After his blood count went up to 69 (normal is 60), from hovering at 20-40 previously. It was a relief. And he immediately became well. Like a snap back into life kinda thing. He continued with his 2 packets of noodles for breakfast followed by MacDonald's for lunch kind of lifestyle. Quite heartening i must say.
So Poddie's back. And i use it everyday. When i run and when i'm commuting. And it's a pleasure really. i feel so entertained. Hopefully it doesn't become bad for my increasingly-introverted self. (don't laugh) in fact, i tink i'm running so to listen to my Poddie. ha. those with good songs, pls send. =)
And as for my job search. it is indeed as its name suggests: search. Both on the inside and on the outside. I'm thinking about more options, persuant to you commenting that i'm damn close-minded where it comes to jobs. sigh. i take it seriously mah. And coupled with my accountant-ness, ...ok, anything associated with my accountant-ness seems to result in the these outcomes. But yes, pray for favour as i go for my job interviews.
And i really feel like shopping. whoo hoo. shop shop shop shop. i NEED to shop.

my bro's got dengue
my poor leeeeeeeetle bro's got dengue. i was really q shocked when i got the sms from my dad telling me that he was warded. the last 4 days has seen him being very listless, lacking appetite, and slightly disturbed. If u noe my bro, u'l noe that nothing bothers him. he's the sort who reacts to about nothing. Unless your joke is really funny or he finds u very surprising. that day, he actually hurried my parents to being him to the doc. my bro never hurries.his blood count is low. so fearing any bleeding, he's not allowed to walk or brush his teeth. as u can see from the pic, 'complete rest' is prescribed. u must think i'm v heartless, he so sick then i happily take pictures. actually he was rather bored when by the time i got there. and i started taking pics and he was v willing. i tink he knows how mad his sister is. ha.
and i was so intrigued by this bar-coded wrist band. it even has his address! (which is mine too!) hahah. anyway, the picture next to his face is not his fore-arm. it's his shin. i was trying to capture the red patches that is supposed to be one of the symptoms. but in his case, it's not exactly patchy. it's just red. looking like a very slight sunburn. his face just looks like he feels really hot. but actually he was cold.
anyway, my poor thing bro. hope he'l b well soon. and when he is, i'l get him to read this post. ha.

my new black things
i previously made a vow not to buy black things. Really. cos i hate black things. i've decided that it complements nothing. but this week, i bot things that are black and i'm actually happy about it. check them out:
Dockland suede boots for winter. keeps the wind out and i won't slip. whoo hoo.
my really nice bag. which really looks good. trust me. worth the exception.
the other black things i bought are underwear. which to me, are legitimately black. therefore allowed. although there are no rules. yay. =)

De-marketing Obesity
Was readin this journal in the library, although i'm supposed to be working on another take-home test. It's called the Californian Management Review. And i really like the physical layout of the journal. it's not like Time or Economist kind of thin paper. But it's like a book. A colourful one at that. With very readable font.
So it's about fast food companies facing public pressure because they sell unhealthy food that people choose to eat. But this article takes on a very neutral stand rather than engaging in the over-argued argument of 'u sell fat food that makes me fat' versus the 'but u can choose not to eat it', it hopes that food companies can take a step that is both responsible and marketable.
it begins by explaining the theories of Food Aquisition and Consumption.
The Law of Least Effort (which i would term 'laziness'): humans innovate to make life in general easier. The motivation to conserve effort will always be there. And this explains why people rather drive than walk, find the nearest parking lot, etc.
The Taste-Nutrition Tradeoff (reasons why we never crave celery, but rather roast beef, chocolate, etc.): 3 strong tastes persevere: fat, sweet and salty. But it's biological and for survival purposes. Fat for insulation and famine periods, salt to guard against dehydration, and sweet for energy and identification of non-poisonous fruits.
The former theory will later be weighed against the cost of it. And the latter will now be weighed against how much we now know about the food. (nutritional value, etc)
Knowing this, companies may attempt to be more responsible and still entice consumers by:
1) Making their food more convenient w/o increasing price too much.
2) Make food portions smaller but with a slight price premium.
3) Inform consumers of nutritional value.
4) change the recipe of the food by making it healthier, but keep it tasting good.
One of the challenges will be having the the consumers perceiving the food as not so 'value-for-money'. and it seems that size plays a big part in value perception. So to overcome that, companies can attempt to increase the size of foods by adding air/water/fibre. this way, they can look bigger but the calorie increase is not so big.
interesting eh.

Last Sunday
Last Sat i said i'l blog about Sun. then i didn't. cos i didn't upload the pics. it's actually q a pain to upload pics. which is y when i post pics, i usually post a lot at one go.

the kid at the top left corner used to be really scared of me. cos i liked to grin at him when i had my braces. scared the living daylights out of him. He came for Anything Goes and after couldn't stop saying 'wah lao!'.
F is my childhood playmate. We both wore green. so deserves a pic. After church we went to help out at the community that my church adopted. And it was during lunch that day that i decided that papaya is my favourite fruit. and i love love love papaya milk (less milk). heeeeeeeeeee.

Things i learn in Psych class
intro to psych class is an eye-opening course. It helps me to appreciate the small little things that i fail to notice most of the time. And it helps to to understand on another level, that i'm fearfully and wonderfully made. Thanks.
Other stuff that i have noted:
1) another (more sophisticated) way to say "you never use your brain" is to call the person a cognitive miser.
i learnt it when the prof used the term to describe the entire class. boo hoo.
2) other than using ur standard Evian bottles and Ice Mountain bottle as make-shift bottles, K has started a new trend by using a Mouthwash bottle. It has another benefit. People can be more sure that even if u don't brush ur teeth, u at least rinse ur mouth. ha.

3) Psych class also promises good company for lunch after.

That day we walked all the way to Sunshine Plaza to have wanton mee. Q nice. Then i realise that actually Sunshine Plaza hosts a lot of food shop and photocopying shops. The alternative to the SMU lib and Bras Basah Complex.
4) Psych class always got snacks one. Thanks F and D. for being constant providers. heee.

<Mysterious Mona>: I think the difference lies in the background... the pics were taken at different places..oh... and the fringe looks shorter...
<Qi Jem and Zhi>: ha. u have to see me in person la.really got diff. my haircuts always DAMN worth it one.=)
<Qi to mona>: mona! where hv u been? i missed u! my fringe is indeed shorter.cos i cut it!! ha. <anonymous>: Question, are the audience participation bits for real or Cirque staff? (I'm watching one of the last shows)
<Qi to anon>: Hi anon.they r real.every show the audiences are different.N not all of them put up a gd show.but the comedian is really gd.
<Myst>: Do you believe in fairy tales?
<Mysterious Mona>: Rumour has it that I am a fairy tale...

MSN nick: xie qi~feeling awesome
So i'm feeling awesome today. cos i had a really good workout last night. i went for kick-boxing class. and feeling the most energetic (something i didn't expect cos the last time i kick-boxed was like last year), i attended the dance fitness class after.
And last night when i slept, my right calf cramped. big time. and today, very pain. sigh sigh.
Today, another reason for my feeling awesome was cos i took my favourite foods first thing in the morning: coffee and papaya. No, i didn't mix them. v nice le. really, i've recently decided that papaya is my favourite fruit. hee.
Talking about food combinations, all must try kaya and cheese. it rocks.
on a lighter note, today i received this email. it's most interesting.

Really, isn't it worrying that uni gals need to b told the reasons for wearing a bra? And matching accessories to my swimwear? then how to swim?
Yea, i guess the men don't get it. but i also don't. ha.
*i found this place that has really nice panties for really cool prices. Ask me about it ok. And i also found out that Marks & Sparks have reduced their prices and improved the styles. Panties cost the same as those in TopShop! (but MUCH better quality) whoo hoo. Really, one can't have too much undies. =)

Friday, Sat & Sun
Met P on Friday. and what did we do? shop! ha. seriously, we're very good at that. then we plonked ourselves at Dome for an ice choc, her favourite. K came to join us. She's working at this airline company and she's happy! and i tink it's a really good thing to be happy where u r working. cos that's what i wan to be too.

Saturday nite was wayyy more exciting. Cos L cooked for us at her place and it was fun! i played with her two kids. I let Wen (the boy) play with my camera and he took a picture of me! so intelligent rite. He was really pleased. And so was i. so i posted the pics. hee.
Look at Rui's feet compared to my hand!! babies are so small!! ok, i noe this is sounding a bit bimbo. but really, so small! and sweeeeeeeeeeeet.
Sunday is exciting too. only now i'm a bit sleepy. so i shall go catch a nap. =) laters.
